D,L-Tosylisopropylideneglycerol is a synthetically produced drug that has been used medically to treat hyperglycemia. It is an enantiomer of tosylisopropylidene glycerol. This drug is also a potent inhibitor of viral infectivity and can be used as an antiviral agent. The anti-viral activity of this drug is due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of the virus's nucleic acid, DNA or RNA, by blocking the enzyme's activity at the stage of phosphorylation or dephosphorylation. D,L-Tosylisopropylideneglycerol can also be used for treating depression because it has been shown to increase serotonin levels in the brain.
