Tin(IV) sulphide is a compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the oxidation of organic matter and can be used as an alternative to potassium dichromate. Tin(IV) sulphide has also been shown to have a high resistance to corrosion, which makes it a good model system for studying the effects of electrolytes on metal surfaces. Tin(IV) sulphide is soluble in water and reacts with sodium citrate at an electrochemical potential of 0.5 V, producing sodium sulfide and copper chloride. Tin(IV) sulfide's reaction mechanism is not fully understood but may involve the formation of hydrogen sulfide or hydrosulfuric acid intermediates from the reaction between tin ions and sulfur-containing species such as thiosulfate or thiocyanate.
