2,3,4,5-Tetrachlorobenzoic acid is a cationic polymerization agent that can be synthesized from fatty acids. It is used in the production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other organic chlorinated compounds. 2,3,4,5-Tetrachlorobenzoic acid can also be produced by the fluorination of olefins with hydrochloric acid or by the chlorination of benzimidazole derivatives with nitrosyl chloride. This compound has been shown to be an estrogen receptor modulator and has been used as a polymerization initiator. 2,3,4,5-Tetrachlorobenzoic acid is also used in the synthesis of dyes and pigments and as a precursor to certain pesticides and herbicides.
