5,10,15,20-Tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine iron(III) chloride is a coordination compound. It is prepared by the reaction of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin with iron(III) chloride in an organic solution. The optical properties and catalytic activity of this compound are dependent on the nature of the solvent. In an aqueous solution it undergoes oxidation to form peroxide and chlorine. The oxidation products are chlorinated porphyrins that can be detected using x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The rate of reaction catalyzed by this complex is dependent on the concentration of chloride ions in the system and the catalyst used. This compound has been shown to be sensitive to changes in pH due to its low detection limit and can be used for quantitative analysis of hydrogen peroxide in various solutions.
