Description :
1,1,2,2-Tetramethyl-1,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethane is a nonsteroidal antiestrogen that is structurally similar to estradiol. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of estrogen receptor-positive cancer cells in vitro and to increase bone mass in vivo. Tamoxifen and 1,1,2,2-Tetramethyl-1,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethane are isomolar compounds with similar affinity for the estrogen receptor. The latter has a higher affinity for the progesterone receptor than tamoxifen. Tamoxifen has been shown to be more effective at inhibiting breast cancer cell proliferation than 1,1,2,2-Tetramethyl-1,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)ethane but less effective at increasing bone mass.
