Tachysterol is a vitamin that is naturally found in skin cells. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as those that cause infectious diseases, by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis. Tachysterol also promotes root formation. It has been hypothesized that these effects may be due to the hydroxyl group on tachysterol binding to receptors on the cells of the plant and animal model systems. Tachysterol has also been shown to have growth-promoting effects on mammalian cells when exposed to light in vitro. This effect may be due to its ability to absorb ultraviolet light and convert it into energy for cell growth.
