Tetrachloropicolinic acid is a compound belonging to the class of organophosphorus compounds. It is an analytical reagent that is used in methods such as electrochemical detection and liquid chromatography. Tetrachloropicolinic acid has been shown to be capable of converting organic mercury into elemental mercury, which can then be removed from water and soil by precipitation with calcium carbonate. The reaction also produces chloride ions, which can be removed by ion exchange. Tetrachloropicolinic acid has been used to treat wastewater by reducing chlorinated organic contaminants such as phenols, cresols and xylenes.
