It reacts with the active site of bacterial enzymes in the cell wall to form nitroso-derivatives and other reaction products. The mechanism of action is similar to that of other halogenated compounds such as chloroform and bromoform. 2,3,4,5-Tetrafluoronitrobenzene is an effective antibacterial agent against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria but does not have any activity against acid-fast bacteria such as mycobacteria or rhodococci.
