Thiamethoxam is a neonicotinoid insecticide that belongs to the chemical class of acetamides. It is used in agriculture as a seed treatment and has been shown to have low mammalian toxicity. The residue levels of thiamethoxam are monitored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Union's maximum residue level is set at 0.2 ppm for crops such as grapes and hops, which are not consumed by humans. The detection limit of this compound in water is 1 ng/L and can be measured with an electrochemical detector. Thiamethoxam is also used as an analytical method for determining the concentration of hydrogen bonding interactions in human serum. The optimum concentration for this compound in human serum is 20 ng/ml, with high values found at concentrations greater than 50 ng/ml.
