Tetra-nitro phenyl-porphyrin (TNP) is a porphyrin molecule with four nitro groups. It has been found to be chemically stable and resistant to hydrochloric acid, which makes it an excellent candidate for use in biological systems. TNP has shown to have an anti-tumor effect in laboratory experiments, but it also has a high absorption of light and therefore is not photostable. The monomers that make up TNP are tetraphenyl, which are synthesized by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with sodium benzene sulfinate and potassium hydrogen sulfate. Tetraphenyl can also be found as a nutrient in the bacteria subtilis, which can be immobilized on surfaces using the chemical process called chlorination.
