It has been shown to have hypochlorous and anion radical scavenging properties. It also acts as an oxidation catalyst and can be used for the preparation of oxidation products. 3,3',5,5'-Tetra-tert-butyldiphenoquinone stabilizes the formation of β-unsaturated aldehydes by acting as an oxidant. 3,3',5,5'-Tetra-tert-butyldiphenoquinone also has antioxidative activity by inhibiting lipid peroxidation in vitro. The antioxidant activity may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the lipid radicals produced during lipid peroxidation reactions.
