2,4,6-Trimethylphenylacetic acid is a sterically demanding compound that interacts with metal ions in wastewater to produce ester compounds. The oxidation of 2,4,6-trimethylphenylacetic acid has been shown to produce reactive oxygen species and carbonyl groups. This process can then be catalyzed by an acid catalyst to generate the degenerative disease metabolites 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethylphenol and 3-methyl-2H-pyridinium chloride. The structural formula for 2,4,6-trimethylphenylacetic acid is C9H18O3.
The wastewater treatment process involves the use of activated sludge to remove organic pollutants from wastewater through biological oxidation using oxygen from air or dissolved in water.
