Description :
Tin(IV) bromide is a white, crystalline solid. It is used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the qualitative detection of fatty acids. Tin(IV) bromide reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form stable complexes. The thermal expansion and chemical stability of tin(IV) bromide make it a good choice as a solid catalyst. Tin(IV) bromide also reacts with hydroxyl ions to form halides, which are useful in the production of caproic acid.
The reaction mechanism involves the formation of an intermediate complex between the reactant and tin(IV) bromide, followed by loss of hydrogen fluoride or water to form the product:
R-H + SnBr → R-Sn-Br + H+ + Br
