Tetramethylammonium iodide is a glycol ether that can be used as a phase-transfer catalyst. It has been shown to have an optimum concentration of 0.5-1.0 mM, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) experiments show that it has a phase transition temperature of -20°C. Tetramethylammonium iodide has been shown to affect energy metabolism in wastewater treatment, and also has been used as the analytical method for hydrogen fluoride, metal hydroxides, and nuclear DNA. This compound is also able to chelate metal ions such as chromium(III), manganese(II), nickel(II), copper(II), and cobalt(II). Tetramethylammonium iodide can also bind with chlorogenic acids found in plant material, which may be due to hydrogen bonding interactions with the hydroxyl groups on these molecules.
