Tos-Arg-OH is a proteolytic enzyme that has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the release of histamine from human basophils. Tos-Arg-OH also inhibits the activity of neutrophils and macrophages. It is not active against erythrocytes or platelets and does not show any significant inhibitory effect on the production of fibrinogen, a protein involved in blood clotting. Tos-Arg-OH has been shown to be more potent than trypsin in vivo, but less potent than papain. This enzyme's action may be due to its ability to form irreversible bonds with nitrogen atoms found in proteins.
