Threo-1-C-syringylglycerol is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of microorganisms. Threo-1-C-syringylglycerol, which is a hydrogen bond donor, inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the carboxylate groups in the bacterial cell membrane. This binding prevents the formation of acetate and proton gradients necessary for bacterial growth. Threo-1-C-syringylglycerol also inhibits amide synthesis and magnesium salt uptake.
