Trimethylaluminium is a molecule that is used in the production of aluminium metal. The reaction mechanism involves the cleavage of the C-H bond and subsequent formation of an alkyl-aluminium bond. Trimethylaluminum is activated to form trimethylaluminoxane, which is then reacted with water vapor to form aluminium oxide. Trimethylaluminium has been shown to react with oxygen to produce hydrogen gas, which can be used as a fuel.
Trimethylaluminium has been studied using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and X-ray crystallography; these studies have revealed that this molecule contains two nitrogen atoms, two carbonyl groups, and one water molecule.
