Description

3-Trifluoromethyl-L-phenylalanine (3TFMP) is a protonated form of phenylalanine that has been extensively studied. 3TFMP has been shown to have higher infrared and electronic absorption spectra than the parent compound. The infrared spectrum of 3TFMP shows a strong absorbance peak at 1640 cm−1, which is attributed to the NH stretching mode. The experimental results showed that 3TFMP is zwitterionic in nature and has an acidic character, as it can be protonated with methylamine, giving a positive charge on the nitrogen atom. The theoretical calculations show that the electronic structure of 3TFMP is very similar to that of phenylalanine and 4-nitro-l-phenylalanine. This similarity indicates that 3TFMP may be able to act as a substitute for phenylalanine in some biological processes.
