Tetrahydropyran-4-carbaldehyde is a CB2 receptor agonist that binds to the CB2 receptor. This compound has been shown to be an effective analgesic, with a profile of activity similar to that of other cycloaliphatic compounds. Tetrahydropyran-4-carbaldehyde has also been shown to inhibit the production of IL-6 in human monocytes and neutrophils. It has been suggested that this effect is due to its ability to activate the CB2 receptor. Tetrahydropyran-4-carbaldehyde inhibits the metabolism of arachidonic acid by COX enzymes and blocks the formation of inflammatory prostaglandins. The formyl group on tetrahydropyran-4-carbaldehyde can react with nucleophiles such as water or alcohols, forming an oxime or hydrazone respectively.
