4-Thienylbenzoic acid is a reactive compound that binds covalently to the active site of phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) and blocks the hydrolysis of cyclic nucleotides. This leads to an accumulation of cyclic monophosphate, which can lead to alopecia areata. 4-Thienylbenzoic acid has also been shown to induce laser ablation in mice with alopecia areata. The drug has a high affinity for female sex hormone receptors and is transported by drug transporters such as P-glycoprotein. The drug's concentration-time curve is linear and it has a half-life of 2 hours when administered orally at physiological levels. The logistic regression model showed that the body mass index was significantly correlated with 4-thienylbenzoic acid concentrations.
