Trimethylsilylmethanol is a model system for the study of control agents. It has been used in kinetic studies with zirconium oxide and hydrogen chloride, which are both metastable, to produce an organic solution. This reaction can be enhanced by using radiation, which can also be used to generate a chemical substance from an organic solution. Trimethylsilylmethanol can be synthesized by reacting methanol with trimethylsilane in the presence of a catalyst, such as palladium chloride or platinum chloride. Trimethylsilylmethanol has the hydroxyl group on one end and a methyl group on the other end. The molecule is asymmetric because it contains more than one chiral center.
