Tetrathiacyclotetradecane is a colorless liquid that is soluble in organic solvents. It has one carbonyl group and four chloride groups, with the chloride groups being tetradentate. Tetrathiacyclotetradecane reacts with metal ions to form anions, which are then hydrolyzed by water to form hydrogen chloride gas. The reaction rate for this compound is increased by the presence of strong acids or bases. Tetrathiacyclotetradecane can be used as an optical reagent for the detection of urine samples containing ketone bodies, such as acetoacetic acid and acetone.
