Description :
1,4,5,6-Tetrahydro-5,6-dioxo-2,3-pyrazinedicarbonitrile (1) is a bifunctional ligand that can be used for the preparation of coordination compounds. It is a solid with a melting point of 153°C and a boiling point of 432°C at atmospheric pressure. 1 has been shown to form hydrogen bonding interactions with hydrogen and carbon atoms in the crystal structure analyses. 1 also exhibits magnetic properties due to its high spin state. The dehydration reactions are slow because of the strong hydrogen bonding interactions between adjacent water molecules. This compound can be used as an indicator for dehydrated conditions because it changes from blue to pink when dehydrated.
