Tin(IV) chloride pentahydrate is a coordination compound with the formula SnCl. The salt crystallizes as colorless to pale yellow crystals that are soluble in water and decompose when heated. The structure of this compound can be described as an octahedral complex with six chloride ions, three from the coordinated water molecule and three from the hydrochloric acid molecule. Tin(IV) chloride pentahydrate has been used in the production of zirconium oxide pigments, which absorb ultraviolet light and convert it into visible light. It has also been used for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments on chlorides to investigate their electrical conductivity.
