Trichlorooxobis(triphenylphosphine)rhenium is a ligand that is used in the preparation of other metal complexes. It has been shown to react with aldehydes and form a stable carbon tetrachloride adduct, which can be thermally decomposed to the corresponding alcohol. Trichlorooxobis(triphenylphosphine)rhenium also reacts with hydrochloric acid to form an unstable chloride adduct at room temperature. This compound readily forms polymorphs and has been shown to have an NMR spectrum that shows the chelate ring in both the solid and gas phases. Trichlorooxobis(triphenylphosphine)rhenium is an inorganic compound that exists as a black solid, or as red needles or a yellow powder when melted.
