Description

Thiamine is a vitamin that has been shown to be essential for brain function and disease activity. Thiamine deficiency can lead to a range of symptoms, including neurological disorders such as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Thiamine is a coenzyme in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and is involved in many other metabolic processes. It also plays an important role in the production of energy from food. The thiamin target enzymes include pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex (AKDC), and transketolase. PDH catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA, while AKDC converts alpha-ketoglutarate to succinyl-CoA. Transketolase converts thiamin diphosphate (TDP) into thiamin monophosphate (TMP).
