3,4,5-Trifluorobenzylamine is a chemical compound that has been used as a palladium catalyst and in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. It is also used to produce formylation products, such as nitro and glyoxal esters. This substance has been found to be highly reactive with both hydrophobic and hydrocarbon substrates, although it does not react with nitro or glyoxal esters. 3,4,5-Trifluorobenzylamine reacts with formyl compounds in a nucleophilic substitution reaction to produce an aryl formate. The reaction proceeds through an initial attack by the amine on the carbonyl carbon atom of the formyl compound followed by displacement of the leaving group (i.e., water). 3,4,5-Trifluorobenzylamine also reacts with ketones to produce methoxy derivatives.
