• Description: 3,4,5-Trifluorophenylalanine is a fluorinated amino acid that has been shown to have a protective effect against Alzheimer's disease. 3,4,5-Trifluorophenylalanine binds to the hydrophobic region of beta-amyloid and inhibits its aggregation into plaques. It also has a spectrum of activity against diaminopyrimidine sequences, which are hallmarks of alzheimer's disease. This compound is synthesized by the addition of hydrogen chloride onto 3-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid (3HPP). The synthesis is catalyzed by hydroxylase enzymes in the liver. 3,4,5-Trifluorophenylalanine is metabolized by the enzyme valine hydroxylase and excreted as an inactive form in urine.
