4-(Trifluoroacetyl)benzoyl chloride (4-TAC) is a potentiometric ligand that binds to an ionophore, cholic acid, or membrane. It has been shown to be sensitive to changes in the environment through its potentiometric response. 4-TAC is capable of forming complexes with various moieties such as chloride, trifluoroacetophenone, and bovine serum albumin. The elimination of chloride from these complexes can occur in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. This process yields 4-TAC and the counterion that was attached to it.
