Tetrafluoroethylene is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that is used as a precursor to tetrafluoroethylene, which is the monomer for polytetrafluoroethylene. Tetrafluoroethylene has been shown to react with sulfolane and chlorinating agents to form 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzene (TFEB), which is an important precursor for fluoropolymers. TFEB can be produced in high yield by reacting tetrafluoroethylene with chlorine gas in the presence of a cocatalyst such as sulfolane or tetrahydrofuran. The reaction proceeds via the intermediacy of chloroform and dimethylformamide. The reaction mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack by chlorine on the carbonyl carbon atom followed by elimination of hydrogen chloride from the intermediate vinyl chloride.
TFEB can also be synthesized from
