Description

S-(Trifluoromethyl)dibenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate is a synthetic compound that is insoluble in water and organic solvents. It has been synthesized from the reaction of amines with trisubstituted trifluoromethyl compounds, and can be used as a reducing agent for nitro groups, fluoroalkyl groups, alkene groups, and cyclic molecules. This agent is also useful for introducing the trifluoromethyl group to various other compounds. Synthetic methods include (1) reacting an amine with a trisubstituted trifluoromethyl compound in the presence of nitrous acid; (2) reacting an amine with a reactive fluorinating agent in the presence of aluminum chloride; or (3) reacting an amine with a reactive fluorinating agent in the presence of sulfuric acid.
