Verrucarin A is a natural compound found in the etoac extract of the medicinal plant, Verruca carinata. Verrucarin A has been shown to exhibit anti-cancer properties in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential, enzymatic inactivation, or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This compound also has potent antimicrobial activity against opportunistic fungal infections. In addition, Verrucarin A has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on HL-60 cells and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells.
Verrucarin A binds to DNA and inhibits the transcription of target genes that are important for cell growth and proliferation. It is thought that this inhibition may be due to its ability to bind with DNA and block transcription factors from binding with their cognate sequences on DNA.
