Valeryl chloride is a fatty acid acylation agent that is used to synthesize diphosphonates. Valeryl chloride reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to give an acylation product, which can be hydrolyzed to give the corresponding phosphonic acid. The reaction between valeryl chloride and sodium carbonate or ester hydrochloride yields the corresponding chlorides of these acids. This reaction can also be catalyzed by sulfa drugs such as sulfapyridine or sulfathiazole. Valeryl chloride has been shown to inhibit herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) protease activity in vitro.
