3-Vinylphenol is a cationic polymerization monomer that was first synthesized in the 1970s. It is used as a cross-linking agent in polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane resins. 3-Vinylphenol has been shown to have potent cytotoxicity against human lung cells, with an EC50 of 3 μM. This effect may be due to its hydroxyl group or its ability to form cross-links with other molecules. The use of 3-vinylphenol as a cross-linking agent for vinyl polymers may lead to increased skin sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation and should be evaluated further before commercialization.
