Valerian extract is a plant extract that has been used for centuries to treat anxiety, insomnia, and epilepsy. Valerian extract contains the chemical compound gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system. This plant extract may have a depressant effect on locomotor activity and an anticonvulsant effect. It also has been shown to have similar effects as benzodiazepine binding sites, which are receptors found in the brain. Valerian extract can be found in food compositions such as honey, wine, and beer. This extract is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to its potential effect on the fetus.
