Visnagin is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the inflammatory response in an animal model. Visnagin also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-8 (IL-8). Visnagin also has antiinflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases. The antiinflammatory effects of visnagin have been shown in vitro using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on atherosclerotic lesions. In addition, visnagin has been shown to suppress neuronal death in response to injury in rats. This agent is a coumarin derivative that binds with high affinity at the response element of nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB), inhibiting its activity.
