Description

Vicenin-2 is a natural product isolated from the Chinese herb, Fructus ligustri. Vicenin-2 has been shown to have anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits the activation of toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 and TLR9, which are receptors found on immune cells that recognize bacterial or viral products. Vicenin-2 also shows an ability to reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential in cancer cells, which may be related to its effect on TLR4 and TLR9 activity. Vicenin-2 also has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of p-hydroxybenzoic acid in vitro. Vicenin-2 is metabolized by liver enzymes into vicenin A, which has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in human blood serum and oral administration in rats. The biological activities of this compound suggest that it may be useful for treating diseases such as diabetes mellitus or cancer.
