Vinylcyclopentane is an aromatic hydrocarbon that can be converted to a variety of other compounds. One way this conversion takes place is through the reaction with zirconium dichloride, which forms vinylcyclopentadiene and hydrogen chloride. The alicyclic product of this reaction has been shown to have high reactivity with imines and other nitrogen-containing heterocycles, which leads to the formation of a variety of products. Vinylcyclopentane also reacts with monocarboxylic acid to produce a cyclic ester and carboxylic acid. This process can be used as a cross-linking agent and has been shown to increase the viscosity of polymers. Vinylcyclopentane is also used as a polarizer in liquid crystal displays.
