Oxazol-5-yl methanamine (OXAM) is a synthetic sulfate with chiral properties. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of tumor growth and metastasis in animal models, and has been shown to inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells by induction of apoptosis. OXAM may also have anti-inflammatory effects due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
Oxazol-5-yl methanamine was first synthesized in 1967 by chemists at the University of Bristol who were seeking a new way to synthesize sulfates. The compound is hydrated and found in nature as ophiorrhiza, which is an extract from the roots of plants belonging to the genus Ophiorrhiza.
