Ethyl 7-methoxy-2-oxochromene-3-carboxylate is a lipoxygenase inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the formation of lipid peroxides in animal tissue. It also has an antibacterial effect on Gram-positive bacteria. The crystal x-ray diffraction of this compound shows that it forms hydrogen bonds with other molecules, which may be responsible for its gelation properties. This compound was found to have antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram negative and Gram positive bacterial strains. Techniques such as thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography were used to identify the structure and purity of this compound.
