2,4-Dioxo-1-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-5-pyrimidinecarbonitrile (DOP) is a synthetic fluorescent compound that has been used as a fluorogenic substrate for the detection of uracil residues in DNA. It fluoresces with an emission maximum at 514 nm upon excitation at 355 nm and is excited by UV light. DOP can also be used as a precursor for the synthesis of other compounds with similar structures. The thermal stability and reactivity of DOP have been studied by fluorescence data. DOP cyclizes to form bicyclic systems that are analogous to those found in natural products such as pyridine, quinoline, and isoquinoline. In addition to cyclization reactions, DOP undergoes condensation reactions and ring opening reactions with amines.
