Ethyl 4-formylbenzoate is a synthetic compound with a nitro group and two phenyl groups. It is an unlabelled, volatile liquid that has been used as a substrate in vitro assays to study the synthesis of other compounds. The reaction of ethyl 4-formylbenzoate with ammonia produces ethyl phenylacetate and formaldehyde. The formation of the imine can be achieved by refluxing ethyl 4-formylbenzoate with sodium methoxide. Ethyl 4-formylbenzoate reacts with a carbonyl group to produce an oxime. With the use of techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, it is possible to determine the structure of this compound and identify its properties such as solubility in water, boiling point, melting point, density, refractive index, and flashpoint.
