Description

Ethyl 2-ethoxybenzoate is an organic compound that belongs to the class of hydrated esters. It can be prepared by reacting ethyl alcohol with benzoic acid in an efficient method. Ethyl 2-ethoxybenzoate is used as a stabilizer and solvent for many chemical reactions. The hydration of ethyl 2-ethoxybenzoate occurs by the reaction of its methyl group with water, producing an intermediate hydroxide ion and a carbocation. These intermediates react with the benzoic acid molecule, forming a new covalent bond and releasing hydrogen gas as a byproduct. The reaction mechanism for this process is mesomeric, meaning that two different resonance forms are possible for the molecule’s structure: one where the oxygen atom is double bonded to carbon atoms and one where it is only bonded to one carbon atom. This reaction will have a higher rate if catalyzed by a base, such as proton or halides
