Oxprenolol hydrochloride is a cardioselective β-adrenergic receptor antagonist that blocks the action of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and other sympathomimetics on cardiac muscle. It has been shown to have a hypoglycemic effect at an optimum concentration of 0.25 mg/kg. The matrix effect is the increase in apparent volume of distribution due to binding to plasma proteins, which can be used to calculate the clearance rate and bioavailability. The median plasma concentration for oxprenolol was determined in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) and was found to be approximately twice that of healthy subjects. Oxprenolol binds with high affinity to human serum albumin, α1-acid glycoprotein, and β2-glycoprotein I. This drug also has been shown to inhibit biological processes such as immune responses in autoimmune diseases by inhibiting T-cell activation or proliferation.
