It can be used in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. This compound also has a catalytic effect on the oxidation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) to 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA). The product may be used in pharmaceuticals, such as the treatment of depression or anxiety, as well as in oxidations involving aliphatic alcohols. The activation energy for this reaction is 32 kcal/mol at 25°C and atmospheric pressure.
