The phosphide ion, P, in this compound can be oxidized to form phosphoric acid with heat or light. This reaction has an activation energy (Ea) of 78 kJ/mol and produces hydrogen gas and the corresponding acid from 2-propyclohexanone. The bond cleavage reaction between phosphine and cyclohexane has an Ea of 54 kJ/mol and produces hydrogen gas, phosphate ions, and the corresponding alcohol.
