Amifostine thiol is a tetranuclear compound that has been used as a model system for the study of radiation-induced DNA damage. Amifostine thiol is a deuterium isotope analog that is hydrolyzed to release aminobispropylamide and thiosulfate in vivo, which are then incorporated into DNA. Amifostine thiol inhibits the uptake of DNA by cells, which may be due to its ability to bind to dna. Amifostine thiol also has an effect on cell culture and fetal bovine tissue culture. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on these cells, leading to a decrease in cell viability. The mechanism of this cytotoxicity is not well understood but may be due to the breakdown of the sulfhydryl groups in proteins by amifostine thiol.
