Bromo-PEG3-bromide is a macrocyclic compound that is used in the synthesis of alicyclic, macrocyclic, and heterocyclic compounds. Bromo-PEG3-bromide can be used as a chloride transfer agent or as a transport reagent. It has been shown to catalyze the substitution reactions of aliphatic and aromatic halides with nucleophiles (e.g., amines) by means of an S N 2 reaction mechanism. The selectivity of this reaction is governed by sterics and stereochemistry.
