Ethyl 2-(2-nitrophenyl)acetate is a nitronate compound that is used as a precursor in organic synthesis. It can be obtained by the reduction of ethyl nitroacetate with sodium borohydride or by the reductive dimethylation of phenylacetic acid. The resulting anion can be converted to an alkoxide, which can undergo tautomerization to yield the corresponding enolate. This conversion is reversible and has been shown to occur under conditions of excess hydrogen bond acceptors, such as chloride ions. The chemical study of this compound has been performed using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), which showed that it exists mainly in the butyric acid form.
