BRL 44408 is a maleate salt of a synthetic compound. It is used as an anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the production of nitric oxide and prostaglandins. The drug has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on pain in animal models, with less side effects than other treatments. In rats, the drug has been shown to reduce blood pressure and norepinephrine levels, which may be due to its antidepressant treatment. BRL 44408 also decreases symptoms associated with inflammatory diseases such as Parkinson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis.
BRL 44408 maleate is an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which produces prostaglandins responsible for inflammation and pain. The drug also inhibits the production of nitric oxide by inhibiting the enzyme nω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). L-NAME blocks the conversion of arginine
